Captain's Address - 2016/17 Season
FLT LT ANDY RAHAMAN –CAPTAIN
It was a great honour to be elected as your Captain for the 2016/17 golf season and it is a duty that I will commit as much time as possible. I would also like to congratulate my Vice-Captain WO Jamie Evans on his election, in addition to those members that have put themselves forward for committee positions within the club. I hope that the membership will appreciate that the Military members are working much harder than before and will be working even harder wef 5 September 2016 when the working hours are extended; however, I know that we will all do our utmost to ensure a very successful season for the club, as will the other committee members. So please be patient if matters are not addressed as quickly as you would expect.
It is hard to take a club as well run and professional as Episkopi any further, but I hope to make 1 or 2 small changes that I feel would benefit the members and make the game more enjoyable, I certainly want to remove (by getting the agreement from the other clubs) some of the ambiguity that exists regarding the use of Astro turf mats whilst playing the course, as I believe that this creates friction in its interpretation.
There are also several greens that require a bit of TLC and I hope in the short term to be able to rectify these if possible (cost permitting) as although it is very nice to have an exceptional club house, the business end and why we all join is to play golf on the best possible surface.
If any member has a grievance or just wants to have a moan, please put it in writing to me so that it can be addressed at committee, otherwise I may forget what the issue was in the first place!! I would also really appreciate that if you have a problem that cannot wait on a competition day, that you let me know after I have played, as I am also a member and want to enjoy my golf and hopefully compete for the odd prize or two.
The Chairman stated that we are an Encroachment and as such, we are granted the privilege to use this facility, we need to ensure that we are putting something back into the community and as such, I will be introducing a very simple method of raising cash for Service Charities – the good old Captains Bunker/Lady Captains Bunker. These will be the two bunkers located on the 1st hole (so that we can all see who went in); my bunker will be the one on the left and Chris on the right. The cost is only €1.00 so please be honest and place your cash in appropriate jars that will be located on the bar. This will demonstrate that we are very appreciative of being permitted to use the facility and putting something back into the service community.
We are ALL members of Episkopi Golf Club and must take responsibility for the club and course. I will be reviewing who takes or has taken an active role to make the club a better facility, including members that enter Club competitions; those that do will reap the small benefits (lockers etc), and those that don’t may have their memberships and privileges reviewed at the end of each season. So remember, it is your club so please get involved, don’t just turn up, play golf and depart and expect everyone else to do the work, this way we will all be able to take the club forward.
In closing, I wish you all a very successful season, I will represent you to the best of my ability and as I said at my opening address, I hope to play with as many of you (or at least have a drink) as possible during the season.
