June Newsletter (My Swansong)
The June Medal was played over two days, Wednesday 31st May and Thursday 1st June. 10 ladies took part.
The winner of Division 1 was Iona Elliott and the winner of Division 2 was Jenny Taylor. Well done to both of you.
On Saturday 3rd June the Aphrodite Bowl competition took place for the ladies.
The winner with an excellent score of 67 nett was Jenny Taylor and runner up Chrissie Hammond with 72 nett. Well done girls and congratulations to all those who qualified to take part in the competition.
The Bunnies Competition took place on Sunday 4th June.
This year 6 ladies took part, the most we have ever had. It was a Stableford competition over 12 holes with the presentation and 'knees up' that followed taking place at Halfway House.
Tina Graham kindly sponsored the competition and Hazel Chapman provided a very nice secret 'bunny' prize.
The overall winner was Sarah Symonds with Sharon Larsen a close second.
I would like to thank all those ladies who helped me out on the day and to my lovely Rob who was my starter. It was a fun day that we all enjoyed even those who hadn't played - thanks to the bubbly!!
Thanks girls for the lovely food you all provided and well done too. For some of you it was good experience for your future club competitions.
It was another hot day for our Lady Captain v Vice Captain's match held on the 6th June.
Once again we used the facilities of Halfway House at the end of our 12 holes individual Stableford competition and we were glad of the welcome breeze to cool us down.
18 ladies took part and the Lady Captain's team had points with 179 points and the Vice Captain's team had 166 points. Well done all of you. Needless to say there were great celebrations afterwards. I would recommend the Strawberries in Champagne!!
The Ladies Knockout Doubles competition final was held on Thursday afternoon. With Jenny Taylor on form having a handicap cut after her win last weekend (her lowest handicap ever) it was going to be a closely contested match. Bo Walker had recently returned from her job in Malaysia so not much chance to practice together. The victorious pair were Sally Harris and Chris Moran who won on the 19th Many congratulations.
There was a bottle of champagne at the clubhouse afterwards so they could celebrate.
The Captains' Day Texas Scramble held on the 10th June was a great success. Andy, our Captain, had all sorts of novel ideas for some of the holes which was great fun. It was very windy so not too hot. There was a presentation afterwards and then some of the members stayed on to set up tables and decorate the patio for our dinner in the evening.
Before the dinner, he awards were presented to those present and then we enjoyed a sumptuous barbeque provided by Bob and Lynn. The singer, who also provided a disco, was excellent and she entertained us all for over 4 hours. The clearing up session at the end was completed in no time at all thanks to those who stayed on to dance the night away.
It was a very successful evening I'm pleased to report and a good time was had by all.
The AGM on Tuesday 13th June was well attended with all but two posts filled for next year as our new committee was nominated. I am sure they will have a very successful year.
I visited the Cyprus Anti-Cancer offices in Limassol the following morning to hand over a cheque and cash that had been raised throughout my Captaincy for the above charity. The money will go to the Home Care side of the charity to help support nurses who care for patients in their own homes. I was met by Mr Michalis Christofides who received the money on behalf of the charity. I was delighted to hand over a total of 833.15. Thank you all for supporting my charity during the past year. Willie has put a photograph and report on the Club's website under 'Latest News'.
We held our last get together of the season at the Cava Restaurant in Episkopi Village on Thursday 15th June. Ange was tasked with persuading the ladies to attend and collecting their money. I was presented with a beautiful pair of earrings which I will treasure.
I had presentations and a 'small' speech to make and then we enjoyed a very nice evening, nearly into the next morning, together for those that can remember it!!!
I should now be saying 'here endeth the final epistle from Christine' but......
On Saturday 17th I assisted Rich with the Episkopi Open Greensome Pairs competition . Mixed, Men's and Ladies pairs were all involved in the day. It was a very hot day but despite that 64 players took part in the competition.
The winners of the Men's competition were Graham Highet and Derek Larsen with 41 points.
The winners of the Ladies competition were Ange Turnpenny and Iona Elliott with 38 points.
The winners of the Mixed competition were Rob and myself with 41 points.
It was a shotgun start with presentation and meal afterwards. Tony Yiasoumi was our sponsor and he and his wife Fran provided us all with a lovely cold buffet. As usual there were those that helped in the background and thanks to all of them for giving up their time to make the day such a success.
I can promise you that this is definitely my 'Swansong'!
